What Is Creativity?

I
ask this question because I hear this term thrown around a lot, and it many cases, the word “creative” has been abused and misused. And while I had originally planned to write a detailed argument against its many wrong meanings or applications, I will keep my response to the question brief and just say that creative does not mean artistic. Good art requires creativity, yes, but creativity is not inherently art.

Creativity is an imaginative and inquisitive mind. Creativity questions the world, and rejects doing something exclusively because it’s been done that way before. Creativity is information sharing, and learning from ideas and opinions different than your own. It is thinking outside of the box and a willingness to try new things. It means the ability to move on to new hypothesis when others have failed. It means removing the fear of failure, indeed, embracing it- for it is from these very failures that creative minds discover new opportunities, new possibilities, and new theories to test.

These are some of my beginning thoughts on creativity, but what do you think? Please post a comment and share what creativity looks like in your life.

Cheers!
